Hi Keith,

the symbols $19, $5, ... are so called NAGs (Numeric Annotation Glyphs)
and
part of the PGN standard. In the meantime it is common to use the usual
symbols !, !!, ?, ??, !?, ? also in PGN files, but this is *not* PGN
compliant !
Every program reading PGN files should be able either to ignore the NAGs
or to interpret them right.

BTW: I know the reverse effect in ChessBase: I imported PGN games, using
symbols like ! into ChessBase 6 and this symbols where simply ignored by
ChessBase: one hundred games, mostly with annotation symbols, imported
and all symbols vanished :-(
