There are now 5 total motherboards out now that I am aware of, (Ref Toms page).
Support for the AMD 1 gig chip is very very slow coming from the motherboard
people.

I have not found the site for the Dell 1 gig. Where you getting that . info>

Concerning the Gateway computer: Have you asked what size the L2 is and _at what
clock speed?_. The Athylon is configured for speed options off of the core
clock. I have not been able to get a reasonable answer from Gateway on the clock
speed, The size is 512!
Compaq also offeres the 1 Gig Athylon, and is less expensive, but have not been
able to get help from their tech people, what platform are they shipping and L2
configuration, they do not respond. So right now know this, the Athylon permits
OEM's the ability to configure Athylons for a relativly inexpensive computer at
the expense of performance. Chances are the Athylon 1 gig's incorporated now are
tuned down from what Tom has been using.
On that subject visit Tom's page again, he has quite different results on the
comparison of Pent/Athylons now based on different platforms from previous
testing. The Pent comparison only looses to AMD on FPU performance alone.

I have just about independantly decided to wait a scosh and see what develops.

One thing for sure, regarding the Pent/Athylon 1gigs, the Athylon raw FPU is
very much faster than the Pent.

Is this a first order Paramater importance in Chess Programs I dunno, Not a
programmer.

How important is L2 buss speed for chess programs. Example comparing core/2 or
core/3 ?, I am afraid units are bing shipped now with Motherboards configured
with core/3. A Gateway dude said that the L2 was 400 mhz for Gateway configured
motherboard (faster than that he said would fry the cpu, hummmm). The only
Problem is 400 mhz apparently is not one of the options for L2 clock, makes one
wonder.

I give three cheers for Gateway, Compaq and apparently Dell for quick response
to the AMD 1 gig cpu. Others will follow and who knows maybe even Dr. Bob will
buy one. (only kdding Doc)
