While each version of crafty is usually a bit stronger than the previous ones (and I think 17.10 is clearly the best so far) such variations are not at all unexpected. Even if you should repeat the experiment and the results were reversed, it would not be a surprise. Crafty's strength is excellent, no doubt about it. But for a single set of experiments among engines that are approximately equal, it takes thousands of trials to get an accurate finding. We'll probably never know which of the two is actuall stronger, because by the time we have performed enough tests to know the answer, we will be talking about Crafty 18.* and Fritz 7.* and won't even care about the old versions any more. ;-)
