You can buy Chessmaster 6000 for less than $30. You can download Der Bringer for free at http://www.reubold.onlinehome.de/ You can also download Winboard for free at http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/personal/Tim_Mann/chess.html and you'll find links on the Winboard pages for downloads of the many great engines available for it, such as Amy, Crafty, Comet, Phalanx, TCB, Little Goliath, AnMon, Inmi, Exchess, LambChop, Tristram, SSE, (and more) all free downloads. BTW, 1400 doesn't qualify you for "a relative weak player", that puts you well above the Chess playing ability of the average person. Pete
