Thief is available from www.freechess.org, or http://www.d2d4.de/thief.asp.

Cclient and winboard are the easiest and most popular interfaces

Thief's pieces are very clear but they are ugly. they are vector drawn pieces as
opposed to bitmaps.  If you want to play bughouse or crazyhouse, you may want to
use thief.  for regular chess, winboard is very easy to use with a nice looking
chess board.
