Subject: About Partially Commercial Posts in CCC

Author: Fernando Villegas

I have seen some people rejecting the slightly commercial post putted
here once or twice by a programmer and I wonder if I am missing
something in this discussion; I say so because until now I cannot
imagine what is the evil if a guy tell us HERE that his products is
ready and has this or that feature. If CCC will be a place where
personal attacks are out of question, we must begin understanding the
different positions and necessities of all of us. Just customers or just
people interested in this field, but with a different “serious”
professional life, may, I presume, to toy a little with the idea to ban
commercial stuff in the name of purity, as if CCC were an academic
paper, but we must understand that programmers and distributors, that
are also part of this, happens that make a living selling his products.
If we want this field to stay, we should want the programmers to stay,
chess stores to stay and so all hands to get a share, be it knowledge,
hearsay, stories and, yes, some business to make. For that very reason
we should let them to tempt us with his software.
Besides, to see some lightly commercial post here not only is
legitimate, but useful. There are not so many channels of information in
this industry, to begin with. If Chris or Stefan or Christophe or Ed
cannot tell us here that his chess program or upgrade is ready, where
are we going to know it? It will appear in the front page of The Times?
How many magazines of chess computers you can get these days? Well, no
more than half a dozen, at most: Computer Chess Report in USA, La Puce
Echiqueenne in France, another one in Germany, a fourth in Sweden, some
pages -not too many- in a few bunch of chess magazines.
So, let them go in peace...
