Here is the real 'problem' that I dislike to see: 1. I won the 1986 WCCC and was immediately accused of cheating. It took a good while to answer all the questions... run all the public tests.. to completely prove this didn't happen. Rather than enjoying a repeat title, this left a sour taste. 2. Hsu and company did what no other has ever done in beating Kasparov. They did what will not be done for a _long_ time again. And yet right after they were able to do this, they were defending themselves against a firestorm of criticism and accusations, mainly by Kasparov, along the same lines. Rather than enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment, this left a sour taste. 3. I decided to release the source for Crafty, and started a whole new 'revolution' of freeware chess engines. I do it for fun. As do many others. Rather than enjoying doing so, I (and others on occasion) end up the subject of a lot of criticism, and misinformation. It compares to giving someone a million dollars, and they respond by "hey, you didn't pay the taxes on this, you cheapskate." "Hey, a million dollars today is like 100,000 dollars 20 years ago, you cheapskate." The old saying "never look a gift horse in the mouth" gets violated often. Not only do some look in the mouth, they look in the ears, the eyes, and maybe even some other body openings that should be left alone. :)
