This post is very insightful, and the author deserve my congratulations. I
will go even further, you have to separate the programs from his author.
Sometimes a strong program has a kind and well resolved author, sometimes a
strong program has a nasty jerk as author(weak programs too). And this goes to
all human activities , books, songs, painting etc.
Crafty is a good program I am downloading and using it since version 9.21,
and I think it doesnt deserve attaks. It does what is supposed to do (play
chess)
In fact I believe that crafty is guilty in making the comercial programs
stronger. The tree book with learning, egtb and SMP were first on crafty. In ICC
singacrafty and Data running in decent hardware are very strong and dangerous
oponents as seen by its ratings.
Unfotunately the real strenght of crafty and scrappy cannot be assessed
because is hidden in a curtain of smoke and mistification (formulas and
policies).
