Can you please name one other freeware chess program that simply is even close to Crafty? Sure at one time, Comet and Phalanx were close, maybe even LG, but now Crafty is clearly a cut above every other freeware program, and a few commercial programs. I find the topics about Crafty here very discouraging, as someone like Robert Hyatt can make such a strong program, make it free to everyone ( Windows and Unix/Linux ), and even take the enormous time to answer all these silly questions, and topics. He should be applauded, he has done something that many of us would not do. If you made a program as strong as Crafty is, would you release it free of charge? Programs like Diep, Shredder, Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs, Rebel Tiger, as just as strong, maybe stronger ( I personally feel Crafty is just as good, if not better ) than it. But they come with a commercial price tag, and really all you are getting is a chess program with a nice little interface, a opening book, and a database that anyone can put together if they wanted. Do you not think Robert could make the best damn database from the games that Crafty and Scrappy play? Instead he has been working for years on a project that so many of us enjoy the fruits from. Do you think that you would have just as much fun with a program per say GNUChess, and not harm intended, is simply not even close to the strength of some lower human players? I think people like to put down an individual they feel to far superior to something they can never achieve. Robert should one day say screw you all, and keep the program for people just from his mailing list, as those people there almost never say the crap said here. Forthe most part it is for tech and bug report, something needed for programs to get the strength of Crafty. Bob has 10,000 beta testers for his program. Do you think that Fritz has even 20% of that? Before posting something so stupid, take a step back and see really what he has done, and made so freely available to everyone. Bob may have his faults, but certainly, Crafty is not one of them.
