I am not certain but I don't think it is possible otherwise it is
likely the SSDF would have played that way.

I agree this is naturally an issue to not be able to use the author's book.

I myself had wondered whether Dr. Hyatt had specified which book to use
in the SSDF testing though I am not sure I see any disadvantage caused
simply by the program interface.

I don't think the interface has any effect. The question is does Crafty 17-10
for Winboard make the same moves as the Chessbase Crafty to that I believe the
answer is yes and the real effect is therefore the opening book.
