Crafty is a great program, but not clearly a cut above every other freeware
program as you say.  Try SOS by Rudolf Huber, the new Comet, AnMon, LG.  SOS is
the primus inter pares of the contenders for #1 in my opinion.  After several
hundred games on my dual machine, and hundreds of games staged by Christian
Liebert, SOS is slightly above Crafty.

I believe that Crafty and a couple of other freeware engines are getting very
close to the best of commercials, which is great. Lots of fun for all of us in
this glass bead game.
