I agree also that if you decide to use GPL code, then you are GPL'd like it or not. However, L.A. did say that he was definitely planning to release the source. Suppose that he has done a bit of cobbling together and hacking things to make it work right. As the author of multiple books on data structures, he is used to a certain degree of high quality. I rather suspect that he may want some time to tidy up the source to his own personal standards, and it would be indecent not to allow him that prospect.
