Piket faces Computer Fritz SSS* in round 1 of Dutch Chess Championship.

The drawing of lots of the Dutch Championship shows for the first round the
top match between GM Jeroen Piket against Fritz SSS*.
The computer Fritz is one of the twelve participants of the Dutch
Championship and has been tipped by several insiders as one of the
favorites. The Dutch Championship which is being sponsored for the fourth
time by Broekhuis Group which will take place in Rotterdam May 7-19 at 1.30
PM local time.

The opening ceremony took place at the playing venue "Bibliotheektheater"
(Library Theatre) of Rotterdam on Saturday afternoon May 6th. GM Paul van
der Sterren, the only participant who refuses to play against Fritz in this
event and thus will receive a zero by default, was absent during the brief
opening ceremony. Van der Sterren is scheduled to play the computer in the
tenth round. Fritz' participation has raised a big controversy among chess
players and generated lots of publicity in the Dutch media whether a
computer should be allowed to play in a national championship.

Fritz SSS* can become the official Dutch Champion. Fritz can not win any
prize money. Due to Fritz' participation and the abolishment of starting
fees, the prize fund has a record amount of 166.250 guilders of which the
first prize is the all time high of 40.000 guilders. In case Fritz finishes
shared first, the title and the money will go to the person of flesh and
blood. In case Fritz finishes first with more than one human being, a
tiebreak will be played in which Fritz will not participate because of the
advantage the computer has when playing with reduced time control. Fritz
will not have access to its endgame modules and is being operated by its
creator Frans Morsch.
