Whether or not a computer should play in a national championship is a fine issue
for debate. I don't think that there is a yes or no answer. I think that if
the federation and the players are up for it, it's a fine thing. Most likely
the reason they'd be up for it is that the computer people have showered them
with money. Anyone who wants to shower any chess federation with money should
be encouraged. I don't know what the Dutch federation does with its money, and
I don't even what to think about what the American federation would do with its
money, but there exists the possibility that the money could be used to broaden
participation in chess events, particularly among children, which is good for
the children and is good for chess.

So it's not necessarily a dumb idea to have computers in national championships.
I haven't been following the issue with the Dutch championship, but there
exists at least the possibility that this could have been done in a way that
would have benefited chess and won the approval of enough of the chess community
that this could have been worth trying.

The bad thing here is that you've got people who wait until the moment of maxium
inconvenience and maximum effect to argue their own case, as Bosboom has
apparently done. This should have been settled beforehand, and this possibility
should have been eliminated. Every player should have been polled with the
question as to whether they would play against the program, to the utmost of
their abilities, and those who said no should have been accomodated or dealt
with in some sane fashion, to the satisfaction of all concerned. This would
entirely eliminate the possibility of an over the board protest, since if one
had occurred, the player could simply be thrown out of the tournament for being
an ass. The time to debate this issue is before the clocks have started.
