Sorry, but it doesn't belong. It is certainly there legally, but it doesn't
"belong" there. Kasparov could propose a match for the world title against me
tomorrow, and though I'd be there legally, I wouldn't belong there. Why? Because
to belong would mean that I am a proper candidate for the title of World
Champion, and to say that would be a gross farce. The same is the case for
Fritz. Yes, it can and may play in the Dutch National Championships, but it most
certainly has no place there. It isn't a matter of strength. It could be Deep
Blue 3 here and my stance on the matter would be the same. You'll notice that
closed national championships have certain criteria that differ from other
events. For example: could Kasparov be the national US Champion this year if he
wanted. You bet not. And it isn't for lack of ability. If I were paired to play
Fritz in the Copa Mercosul (a very rich open that takes place in Sao Paulo every
year), I'd have no problem with that. Pair me against it in the Brazilian
National Championship and I'd do as Bosboom did. Saying the title would go to
the first human player in the list would still be unacceptable BTW. The closed
national championship is only for those who are candidates to the title.
