Well, you cannot have it both ways. To the professional players, this is the
larger picture. Tournaments are everything. Hence, study your opponent's games,
practice against computers, analyze with computers, study your own games,
practice, etc., etc., etc. Anything to get an edge.

In this case, Bosboom played it smart. He "forfeited" a game that he would
probably have lost anyway, and he kept himself in the running for the big money,
and he got an extra day of rest. Cutthroat if you ask me. But, when it is so
obvious that you are being cutthroat, then people criticize you. It's the way
life goes.

You cannot expect people who do this for a living to be gentlemen when it comes
down to their bread and butter.

And that's one of my points. I understand your complaint, but I see little merit
in it. When a person plays professional chess, I would EXPECT them to take every
little edge as long as it is within the rules. Bosboom did. Yes, it leaves a
sour taste in our mouths, but we should criticize the association for allowing
the loophole, not the player (who was railroaded by the association into playing
a computer or not playing in the tournament or not being in the big money) for
taking advantage of the loophole.

Enjoyed it.

KarinsDad :)

PS. I read a quote of yours (or at least I thought it was your name) the other
day when signing onto mplayer.com. It was something like "asking if computers
think is like asking if submarines swim". Was this your quote? If so, could you
get me the exact quote. Thanks.
