This is sad. Well, I admit that I do not know the politics behind all this. Fritz was allowed to participate over the objections of the players perhaps, or something like this? Whatever, but if this is the case then a player should either refuse to play the machine as a protest (or resign on move one), or else fight like a man and play to win. I do not agree with speculation that this was an intended loss, I think the great move f4! was overlooked and the game was in fact lost at 9. Na4. Not easy to see. Now if he wasn't trying his best, that simply reflects on him. Despite my disdain for some aspects of Kasparov's personality, I know he would never "let" anything or anyone beat him intentionally once he sat down to play. It is childish and not the mark of a true competitor. Therefore I think it is insulting to Van der Doel to assume that he lost intentionally. If in fact he did, then he is insulting himself.
