Thanks, Steve, that does work a bit faster. I thought I had a reasonably fast computer but stuffing 4407 text files, close to 8Mb just for the last one month into another file for the CCC Database Navigator and then trying to read that into Wordpad, after letting loose Retab.exe, this kept my harddisk working for well over 5 minutes. The performance was worse after this than with the old 386! Maybe I did something wrong there, I don't know. The FAQ did leave some questions unanswerered. It is not clear to me what a "catalog in NC" is,- does that refer to Norton Commander maybe? -, how to use BR.COM exactly and if it is best to replace those bytes with just a zero byte and how to put the textfiles in alphabetical order. When I finally viewed the messages of last month in the Navigator I only saw one message from Chessfun and one other without title by Ed in the index. Maybe it works better with a smaller number of files. But the "Find" function of Windows works! Eelco
