You'd never have heard that from me. There are certainly many positions whre
that is true, but certainly not all. Of course I presume you mean that in a
winning position but even then there can be more than one answer. An obvious
example: An empty board with a white king on a3 and queen on b3, plus a black
king on a1. White to move, which is the best/shortest solution? Sure, here there
are only 3 pieces on the board so it's obvious, but what about a board full of
pieces? Suppose in one position you can either win a piece, 3 pawns, or the
exchange and a pawn? Which do you go for? Which is the best?
In this case you have a different issue. The programs can see 3 ways to force a
win but the strongest and most expeditious is also the hardest to find. Why?
Because in all three cases there is no mate found but the last one will
certainly cut down on the overall game length the most in the long run.

One position does not the best program make.

I'd like to see Little Goliath tested on this. It tends to be absolutely vicious
in tactical positions of this sort, but that doesn't make it the best program
nor the best analyst.
