Hi Georg,
I guess it depends on your definition of "World Champion".
The FIDE Champion is Khalifman, thanks to his victory in the Las Vegas
tournament last year. Karpov was the previous title-holder, but he refused to
defend his title and ended up suing FIDE, I think.
But, most people equate "World Champion" with "strongest player", and by that
definition the title holder would clearly be Kasparov. The January 2000 rating
list pretty much tells the story:
1 Kasparov, Gary.................. g RUS 2851
2 Anand, Viswanathan.............. g IND 2769
3 Kramnik, Vladimir............... g RUS 2758
4 Shirov, Alexei.................. g ESP 2751
5 Morozevich, Alexander........... g RUS 2748
6 Leko, Peter..................... g HUN 2725
7 Adams, Michael.................. g ENG 2715
8 Ivanchuk, Vassily............... g UKR 2709
Bareev, Evgeny.................. g RUS 2709
10 Topalov, Veselin................ g BUL 2702
11 Karpov, Anatoly................. g RUS 2696
