It was a nice gesture, but apparently the chess players regard it in the same
way as if you give a thumb's up to an Israeli or the high sign to an Italian.
Regardless, the motivation behind the gesture was "nice".

Please pardon me if I've got my nationalities mixed up but you get my idea.
