I had in mind something that Tal always called "intuition" and I, for want of a better word, called "gut feeling" as well. I think I'd better illustrate. Please, look at this position: [D]r1b2rk1/pp1n2pp/2p1p3/3p1pNq/2PP1Pn1/3BP1P1/PP2N1Kb/R1BQ1R2 b - - 2 13 and tell me how on Earth do I know, almost instantly, that 1...Bg1 ought to win? Why would I play this particular move in a blitz game? That particular bit of my "knowledge by recognition (of patterns?)" is a sample of the term "long range tactical ability" in which I believe humans to be better than computers. If you wish, you can try out your programs and let me know how long it took them to find the winning move. ***
