Some are calling programs 'GM strength' because of their performance
against GM's. The problem is, a lot of quite low rated players are
able to regularly beat good programs, and I've got no reason to doubt
this. It's because they have been around programs all along and have
figured out ways of beating them. The strong players who are losing to
them are geared to playing strong humans, where the money is, not against
strong programs, where the money is'nt.
We always hear about such and such a program beating this or that
titled player, but when the same program loses to a mediocre human,
well, that's not newsworthy. Also, when programs lose casual games
they are invariably unrated.
Chess professionals play chess to put bread on the table. When their
livelyhood is on the line because of the silicons, they will go to work
figuring out ways to beat them regularly.
