I'd turn off the analysis mode in Winboard when plaing a game for one thing,
that might be interfering.  Also, do you have both book.bin and books.bin?  If
you don't, that's probably a problem.

There will be errors when you use small.txt to compile a book with, personally I
don't think it's very worthwhile to compile a book from that.  I'd suggest
getting a real pgn file to use instead..
