I am not familiar with Junior, but disagree strongly about Fritz. He plays *very* well without an opening book, in fact he will play right along the lines of opening theory, Ruy Lopez, Queen's Gambit, etc all without book, and in most cases will choose the strongest theoretical move. Other programs will make bad moves in the opening without a book, but Fritz not only plays well but shows an appropriate evaluation as well. Playing a bad move to get out of book early against Fritz is likely to backfire much of the time, IMO.
