Cause most of the the time it is not the first, the second or the thirth move wich is important for the mainline, but maybe the fourth, fifth or even 20th move wich is important for the mainline. An other quite reliable test can be safe your game delete the moves wich comes after the critical position. then create a book put in the game you used saved. Then play an engine engine tournament and use the book you just created Junior6 will not play all games the same you shall see it improves After playing about 6 till 8 games on tournament level you should try to look at the games and be critical look if you find an improvement for one or both sides When you have done that and after you did find improvements save the games you used played included your analyses put the games in the openings book and play again a tournament with the same book this is a good way for finding the best moves I agree it takes a lot of time and work put you can be quite sure you did find the best moves When I analyse a game for a new openings move I go even further but that's an other aproge I look at the engine engine game look to the critical position go back to that point try to find an improvement try to keep the position solid and in the meantime as active as posible keep a good eye on the threats of the oponent and solve them without loosing to much activety most of the time it can help to solve a comming problem before it's there Most importantly try to find a theme (a long during plan) and stick with it.
