Couple of comments on this: 1. I heard that Deep Blue was mostly tactical but could calculate so deep that it picked up on positional ideas. I wish that my program could calculate so deep. :-) 2. Early chess programs didn't know the difference between a good and a bad position, so no amount of extra thinking time would produce better moves. Modern programs understand chess much better but may still be missing out on a few things. Maybe to get any benefit from more processor power then we need better evaluation functions. I am trying to write a program that calculates all the squares on the board as to who controls those squares. (Maybe this has already been done and I am wasting my time?) I expect that my program will be very slow, but maybe the evaluation function will have some benefits. John Coffey
