Subject: Arasan 5.4 released

Arasan 5.4 is available from the following location:
http://www.best.com/~jdart/arasan.htm. Source and executables
are available.

This is the same version that has been playing on ICC recently
(I use a bigger opening book on ICC but the one that is released
with Arasan is a subset of it).

Following are the changes made since version 5.3:

  1. Fix crash in arasanx when time == 0.
  2. Time usage in "increment" games has been increased somewhat.
  3. Fix possible crash in scoring module.
  4. Fixed a few warnings/errors found by Bounds Checker.
  5. Some tweaks to pawn scoring. Doubled pawns that are
also isolated now count as 1 isolated pawn. There is
now a "space" term that encourages pawn advances and
     penalizes cramped positions.
  6. Attack bitboards are now reduced in number, similar to
(but different in details from) the "compact" representation
used in Crafty. This results in faster speed generally.
  7. A fix was made to positional learning - the permanent hash
table was not being probed in all cases in which it should be.
  8. Fixed arasanx so it wouldn't try to make a move after a
repetition draw. Another bug was that Arasan would stop
searching after declining a draw offer.
  9. Null move usage is somewhat more restricted in endgames,
compared to 5.3. This allows solution of some problems such
     as FINE174.
  10. Some fixes + additions to the opening book.
