Subject: OT--It's okay you stopped because you wanted to stop

Go up one level in this thread

My apologies in advance if you take this the wrong way. I am trying to make
a point in general about our CCC behavior.
This is sort of a plea for thicker skins (all of us), so bear with me a bit,
please. I don't write well enough, most of the time, because I can't capture
the same light-hearted tone some other posters seem to inject naturally into
their postings. But I'll try to get past that problem if you will also.
   Let's be clear (self-honest, that's all--you don't have to admit or deny
anything here). You stopped the second match because *you* wanted to stop the
match. Don't blame the eMails or behavior of other people for your decision,
even if you don't like their 'attention'. You chose to be in the limelight in
the first place.
You are no stranger to disagreements or controversy. You carry on many
discussions where you disagree with others. I've read many of your posts. You
can handle the maddening crowd! You are stronger than this.
You post on an open forum (moderated) where all have the right to read your
postings and comments, and where all have the right to make remarks regarding
your postings. This is normal. You accept this when you signed up to this
bulletin board.
You don't have to give out your eMail address (although you apparently did).
Abuse is another topic. Merely being disagreed with is not abuse, even if
the disagreement is very strong.
You never said (to Christophe), 'I understand now' or 'I agree', although
acquiescing to run another match might be seen as such a change of heart (or
understanding). That would have been a nice thing to do, if true. It would
show you benefitted or learned by the posting of another, and would be sort of a
thanks to them for showing you another point of view that maybe you didn't
realize or bother to think about.
If an oversight had been made, a simple admission 'I did overlook that, you
are right' and perhaps 'If I have time, I will run the match in a different
(better) manner' would have been nice. We all make mistakes. We all make
oversights. We all don't understand program features as well as the programmer.
Nothing to be ashamed about, nothing to feel guilty about, even if others take
up the banner and start attacking your well-meant experiments and sharing of the
results.
You post what you are going to do (start a second match), and in the same
breath make 'threats' to stop it if others don't like it (agree with your
conditions not to send too many eMails or make too many comments). You have the
right to make such a post, I don't deny that. But you have to know this whole
topic regarding pondering has been the subject of many heated debates on CCC.
Yet you willingly inject yourself in it by helping with some testing (a valid
contribution, by the way--thanks) and publishing the results.
Do you wish to be in the limelight (post on an open forum) but not receive
comments like you yourself make about other persons and their testing
procedures, etc?
You selected CT12e to run on the faster MHz machine. So be it. It is silly
to criticize a practical choice [on the other hand, it would not be silly to
point out the MHz distinction in discussions interpreting test results from such
a setup, with unequal machines--this would be appropriate, even if some think it
trivial or critical to so mention it]. You may only have two machines, and if
so, one or the other program must use the fast and slow MHz versions. Why do
you accept the 'heat' of others who may disagree. I support your practical
choice.
Feel free to not run the second match. No problem. But don't turn our
traditional CCC swan dive exit into a swan dive cancellation of the match. We
don't need a lot more tear jerker threads debating the emotions and nature of
other posters to this site (and reasons why they ...).
Do you want more eMail and comments about your thin skin? I believe not.
This is not meant to be a negative note about your character. Normally you are
tougher than this. We all have some off days--I have plenty of them, where
things go wrong and I lose my patience with others. We all get over them.
I only say you are bringing this upon yourself, you have the right to change
your mind, but don't try to pin your hurt feelings or thin skin on the behavior
of others who properly share their differing opinions as you have on many
occasions. Sometimes this foments additional problems.
Keep up the good experimenting, but hey, don't post if you don't want
comments. Any postings you want to make are fine by me--just stick to the
facts, not the emotions, please. This is a personal plea, nothing more. I'm
not trying to start a fight, but to get people (not directed personally at you)
to realize that their own behavior is what contributes to this bulletin board's
success (or failure). We can post and learn, even with many disagreements, if
we don't blame each other for our own feelings.
P.S. You haven't hurt my feelings. I respect you and your postings, even if
I sometimes disagree with them. Please keep up the good work (testing,
commenting, discussing), despite the controversy that often crops up. I've
ordered some thicker skins from ICDchess store, by 'Tuff Covers'. They should
arrive any day now. They will be freely distributed to our readership as soon
as they arrive. :
   Take care,
      --Steve
