You need to enable anti-aliasing in the menu Media, submenu Display Setting. The pop-up dialog in this submenu allows you to set "Depth" (set it to 8 bits/pixel) and "Text Alpha" (set it to 4) and "Graphics Alpha" (set it to 4). These setting give at 1024x768 (or higher) give quite smooth looking fonts and line graphics.
