It is irrational to make a judgement from a single game. Every computer chess
program has bugs in it, and all of them make stupid moves from time to time.
Look at some of the things that Robin Smith has posted showing absolutely
ludicrous choices at extremely long time control. If modern programs can make
outright blunders after thinking for 24 hours, should we be surprised to see
them in the games of yesterday?

All that having been said, I would not be at all surprised if todays programs
were stronger. But without adequate testing we will not know the answer. Since
those machines are (I believe) no longer available, that means that we will
never know.
