I read KD's original post and thought it was fine, mainly because I assumed KD
was working on his chess program and ran into a problem. Okay, I really
wouldn't like to see 100 messages about C++ specifics, but I don't have a
problem with someone who is writing chess (or similar, e.g. othello) software
asking for some help.

Nonetheless, it's probably true that KD could get better feedback in
comp.lang.c++.moderated. There have already been a few things said that, to the
best of my knowledge, are clearly incorrect. But I think that all I'll say at
this point is that the ISO C++ standard specifies proper behaviour, that some
compilers in common use today are very far from compliance, and that people
using those compilers shouldn't make claims about the capabilities and/or
limitations of C++ based upon what their compiler does or doesn't do.
