You are right to point this out, i think.
I for myself have rescued many lost games against crafty in this matter.
Fixing that wouldnt be trivial but not impossible.
It is not that easy, since in some positions ...a2 is a forced win. This is the
case if the attacker can build another passed pawn or create a weak pawn in the
defenders position (i havent seen your game yet).
One should consult the endgame literature for the details.
