Subject: two sights of chessprogramming

Go up one level in this thread

The whole thread looks to me as a controversal discussion of the "hardcore" and
the "softcore" people (Excuse the words).
It is always nice, when I meet Steffen Jakob, the author of Hossa, and we
discuss chessprogramming a whole night. He is a typical "softcore", trying to do
everything in the evaluation, I am a typical "hardcore", trying to do everything
in the search. And thats the interesting thing in our disputes. We can learn
much from each other, and most time, the truth lies in the middle (if there is
any truth).
A typical discussion:
Steffen: "Look at this position, the static evaluation is s...!. It will be easy
do code this thing......"
Werner: "But the Engine finds it in ply 5 after 0,1 sec!!!"
Steffen: "But if we are some plies before this position, the Engine will be dumb
and not find the right move in time"
Werner: "But is this particular problem worth the coding and does it fit smooth
to the rest of the evaluation?"
.......

an endless story, but both groups can learn out of it!

Werner
