This happened to me in Fritz, too. I was playing against it and it had the permanent brain enabled, I made the move and the engine window stayed blank! I am forced to Ctrl+Alt+Del it to close it. For a while, copying the position and closing and reloading the program used to work, but of late, whenever I do that, the board is disfigured. This problem, though, has only happened to me twice. It might be system resources. I have a 233 Pentium II, MMX with 32 Megs of Memory.
