Not a big point and defintely not worth too much discussion but I'd have to
disagree that everyone is looking for a competitive program.  Of course chess
programming is difficult and as a result many people don't know where to start
even though they may be facinated by the concept of chess programming.  A simple
program like Tom's serves as an excellent introduction and shows that although
it is difficult, a simple program can be created relatively easily.
