I think I'm summarising the article well by saying that what Stefan has done
well is to create algorithms that will, at the right time, sacrifice a pawn to
generate space for the king.

What he seems to be saying is that, when the king has got something useful to
do, like supporting his own passed pawn, his program can sacrifice a pawn to
generate space for his king - which can then enter the game with decisive effect
(sometimes).

At the heart of this long article, this seems to me to be what Stefan is saying.

Do people agree that this is what allows Shredder to achieve victories over
programs running on faster hardware than itself?
