Answers will _always_ be based on personal taste so you can only collect and try and make your personal decision then . Places I have tried and feel competent to express an opinion about : a.) MS Zone : ridiculous , laggy like hell , ugly interface , free, first time I went there I wasn't able to find any gaming partner , next time I found some kiddies who insulted me (--) b.) Yahoo : rules when it is about chatting while playing ; very usuable interface ; _many_ cheaters , many kids ; when you found a suitable room and know a few people it is still a very nice _free_ place to play chess ; not the right place if you want to find out about your own strength or seek high quality games but usually very enjoyable ; the site for a lazy sunday afternoon (+) c.) FICS : ICC for the people who can't/ don't want to pay the fees for ICC :-) ; a nice place , but for me a really good interface is missing there ; also _lots_ of cheaters as there is nothing you can lose . ( +-) d.) Chess.net : Matter of taste ; Í was very much confused by the interface there and had enormous lag ; I have heard others love it , probably _really_ a matter of taste ( -) e.) ICC : costs much money , has the best players , has the best interface , has the best features , has the most titled players , features nearly every major GM tourney sometimes with comments of Super GMs , etc . ; tries to ban cheaters with varying success . I personally think ICC is best as the money thing lets people be a little more sensible and behaving better . ICC lacks good , sensible talks though ( chess and other topics ) ; I don't know why as I can't see a reason but it is true ; by all means do : set shout 0 and set sshout 0 and other "ignore community" features and concentrate on the games . ICC is the place for the serious chessplayer ; niveau of games in every way is the highest ; little example : if I remember it right the 4th online game I played there was already one where I was spanked by an IM :-) . So again _another_ personal opinion for you : sorry. pete
