The default value of selective search is 6. I use most of the time CM6000(ss=10) to analyze positions because my experience is that it is faster in tactics because the default CM6000 with ss=6 does not use null move pruning enough. When chessmaster is at depth a/b my understanding is that it means: a plies without null move pruning, b plies with null move pruning and some extensions. Uri
