AEGON tournament disappears, do we let this happen? This might be not the right moment to start this since most of the programmers are still in Paris but today I talked with Cock de Gorter and he confirmed that there will be NO 13th Aegon tournament next year. According to the Dutch computer chess magazine 'Computerschaak' the following argumentation by AEGON was given: 1) The tournament went too big; 2) The computers won last year so why continue; 3) Publicity was mainly pointed to the chess community; I respect the decision of AEGON and I like to thank them for their hospitality the last 12 years but I also regret their decision very much. The Aegon tournament has become more popular and famous every year and the tournament will be missed by thousands of people all over the world. 50 different chess programs competing 15 GM's, 15 IM's and 20 other strong chess players, live coverage on the Internet etc, we will surely miss it. BUT...... Maybe we all could try to convince the board of AEGON to reconsider their mind. I suggest the following but I like to discuss it first and get some useful input before I will activate the idea. By a script on my home page you can enter your comments on the decision of AEGON and ask the directors in charge (Mr. Kees J. Storm and Mr. Elias) to reconsider their decision. I will collect all the email, print it out and hand it over to AEGON. If there is enough input they might change their minds. Let's save Aegon.... How about it? - Ed Schroder -
