Perhaps sponsorship is the important thing after all. I still think games between humans will be interesting even if computers are unbeatable, but perhaps the general public will not, and as a result interest in major human tournaments will wane. Perhaps computers will become such powerful chess analysis tools that a number of variations will be shown to be superior to all others. In this case human players can always opt for other variations since no human can memorize everything, but what will existence of such variations mean for interest in the game? For humans the game itself will always be a challenge, but if computers have the final say in all things chess than perhaps the public interest will not be what it was. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. For now, whether GMs refuse to play them or not makes little difference in their progress.
