It was a nice experience to cover the Blitz tournament almost live.
But now I feel somewhat exhausted, and will try to find the direct
way to my bed ( without extensions and without null moves ... )
Tomorrow we will see the final countdown:
Junior and Virtual are the only contenders for the title, and Junior
is half a point up. Interestingly they will have both Black, and they
will have both to play against "tactic monsters":
Fritz - Junior
Dark Thought - Virtual
The Junior team may have a slight advantage ( besides it 0.5 point
lead ): Fritz is a commercially available program, and one may try
to cook something during the night ...
On the other hand side Dark Thought is like a black hole, except for
a recent ICCA article. Last year, in Jakarta, Virtual was able to beat
the Alpha monster ( Dark Thought was running on a 433 MHz Alpha, in
October 1996 ! ).
During Chris Whittingtons final phone call on the Blitz tournament Amir
Ban ( the programmer and operator of Junior ) cried into the handy:
Junior's peformance is pure luck. But probably he will remember ( in a
more silent hour ) how much energy he put in his baby, and how long he
had had to wait ( since Jakarta, where big obstacle avoided a Junior
participation ) to demonstrate Junior's strength.
Independently, who of the two will get the title tomorrow, it will be a
worthy champion. IA
