Konnichi wa, Tina! Gokigen ikaga desu ka? How are you?
Mmm , maybe you'd rather hear some English for a change.. I bought myself a
Japanese to English dictionary to pass some time so I had to show off a
little.. Pete Galati made a list with all nationalities represented here in CCC
and I believe we even have one or two Japanese members! So I better be careful
with what I say and with my spelling too. Tina, I believe you meant Johan de
Koning there in your post as being the keen programmer of The King?

This just to say that I hope everything is alright with you. We are having a
small heatwave here at the moment. Dutchies have to play again next Wednesday in
the European Soccer Championship, against France who are the favourites I think.
That could be a fine match. Cohost Belgium is already out and, sorry for Mogens,
so is Denmark.

I just read at the KNSB site that they are not planning to repeat the experiment
with a computer in the Dutch National Chess Championship next year and that if
they had known there would be so much resistance from within the chess community
they might have reconsidered. They are also talking of finding a way to
recompensate IGM Paul van der Sterren, who refused to play against Fritz,
because the rules state that nobody could be forced to play against a computer.
The main sponsor of our chess federation the past few years, Broekhuis Training,
said they loved all the publicity in the media but at the same time they are not
renewing the sponsoring contract. Maybe there is no connection as the sponsors
from Broekhuis, they are in computer training courses, themselves state but on
the other hand I can't believe everybody was very happy with the controversies.

I was trying to think of a way to help Ed's attempt to improve iterated
alpha-beta with his "AB fool" algorithm but that's not very easy going when you
are not a programmer. On the other hand maybe some of the ideas you had, Tina,
of better using the information from "next best" moves could still be used in
some limited way!. It would have to be very limited because you can't forgo
completely on alpha beta, Ed switches it off for only a few seconds at the start
of an average three minute search.

Anyway, just a short message from the other end of the world. Please don't mind
my rambling too much.. I hope you are well!

 Eelco
