VB and VB++ don't work anything alike at all. Although VB does compile programs, it is not possible to build a "stand-alone" executable which statically links all dlls into one executable. In my opinion, this is one of the major drawbacks of VB. As for built-in database capabilities, VB supports the use of Access databases as a defacto standard. Years ago, they used to also offer the ability to use an ISAM database, but I'm not sure that is still available. Users don't need to have Access installed if you build an installation program that includes the DAO (Data Access Objects) files. Sounds like you've got a great start on programming. Keep at it. Oh, by the way, if you want to distribute your work, look into buying a copy of Installshield Express or a similar product for automating your installations. It's better than the built-in tool you got with VB and makes life a whole lot simpler.
