Hello,

>Why registring a computer on fics is so hard.

If it is an original account, it is not difficult at all. If it is a clone, it
is really a shot in the dark.

When I was in charge of computers, I had decided to accept Golem's request, but
resigned that position before I added it on FICS. I passed on the list of
accounts which I had decided to accept on to the person currently in charge, and
have no idea what has happened since then.

Leila doesn't ring a bell though. There were some applications I hadn't
processed yet when I resigned the position, but I once again passed those on, so
no applications should have got lost in the changeover.

When I was in charge of computer accounts, an original engine was a shoe-in to
get an account. I believe the current person in charge also has the same
outlook.

Well, it would seem that the person currently in charge of computer accounts was
having some personal issues that kept him from his computer for a while. He
says that he is starting to work on them again, but I don't know what to expect.

When I was in charge of computer accounts, the average wait time for an
application was about 10 days. I made a policy of responding within 1-2 weeks
all the time, but sometimes I had nothing to do and got them done on the day I
got them, sometimes I got busy and it may have taken 3 weeks. However, there
was never a single one which took me more than 3 weeks. Please keep in mind
that sometimes I would have people coming online to complain to me that they had
been waiting for a month, and when I looked at the e-mail I got from them, they
sent it less than a week before. A great majority of the complaints from users
saying they had sent their application in months ago were simply people being
impatient. However, I can see that in your case you actually have been waiting
a very long time.

There is something you should know about this process - typically it takes
about 10-15 minutes to process a computer account application, and on a low week
I'd get about 10-15 applications, on a high week, I'd get anywhere up to 50 of
them. It doesn't even end there. The person in charge of computer accounts
also has a lot of other work to do concerning computers. When you consider that
this is a volunteer position, and also that every admin has many other
responsibilities, I don't think that waiting 2-3 weeks to get a computer account
is all that much to ask.

Being a computer chess enthusiast myself, the position of being in charge of
computers was very frustrating. Here I was trying to be helpful, in my spare
time, and all I ever got from it was complaints. Things got so frustrating it
was unbelievable. I literally had some people sending in an application in the
morning and complaining later in the afternoon that they'd been waiting a month!
Some of these people made a policy of constantly harassing me on FICS and made
my time there extremely miserable. It shouldn't come as a surprise that I have
resigned the position. There is only so much I am willing to put up with,
especially when it's a volunteer position.

I will speak to the person currently doing computer accounts, and if he doesn't
have a problem with it, I will add your account personally if he hasn't done it
already.

Regards,
Adrien.
