Chessmaster does not do selective search in the first 6 plies.

Chessmaster shows depth x/y and it probably means that the first x plies are
searched by brute force without null move pruning and the next y-x plies are
searched with null move pruning.

I can tell chessmaster to show mr thinking lines(it shows every 1/2 second the
line that chessmaster considers that is a possible legal moves of both sides)

Chessmaster always shows at least x plies in the thinking lines but sometimes
not more than x plies(the reason is probably the fact that when it does a null
move search it cannot show more than x plies without showing illegal moves
because null move is based on the idea of letting one side to move twice)

There are also extensions that chessmaster does so the total depth in
interesting lines is more than y.

Selective search=10 means that y-x<=10
In endgames when chessmaster does not trust null move y-x is smaller and I often
get y-x=5 even with selective search=10(with the default selective search I get
often y-x=1 in endgames).

In the middle game I get often the upper bound
