Subject: SOS vs Crafty

I have been saying that the only "free" program that can match if not surpass
Crafty in strength is most probably Rudolf Huber's SOS. Having found a spot of
free time I decided to try these two out. Conditions for the first match: my
dual PII-400 running under Win 2000, ponder on, Junior 6 GUI, General.ctg,
tablebases, game in 20, sudden death, twenty games altogether. Versions: Crafty
17.11 and SOS 3/2000. Result: 13-7 for SOS!

PII, Blitz:20' 2000

1 SOS 1010½1111½½0111½½½10 13.0/20
2 Crafty 17.11 0101½0000½½1000½½½01 7.0/20

Second match: the same as above, except for the time controls: this time it was
only blitz (game in 5), thirty two games. Result: 21-11 for SOS!

PII, Blitz:5' 2000

                  12345678901234567890123456789012
1 SOS 11110½½0½111½1½1½101011½11000½11 21.0/32
2 Crafty 17.11 00001½½1½000½0½0½010100½00111½00 11.0/32

These results should be good pointers -- SOS seemst to be stronger than Crafty,
perhaps at tournament time controls! I can hardly wait for the SSDF to start
testing SOS :)
