Crafty 17.6 on my machine fails high on Rb4 at ply 18. When it resolves
it, it reckons the score is about 2 in Black's favour. The PV shown
on my machine at the moment (some way through ply 23; my machine had
nothing more important to do...) is:
... Rb4 ; cxb4 a4 ; b5+ Kxb5 ; Ba3 c3 ; Re2 Kc4 ; f4 Kxd4 ;
f5 Ba6 ; Rh2 exf5 ; e6 Bb5 ; Rh8 b2 ; Rh4+ Ke5 ; Rb4 f4+ ;
Kf2 Kxe6 ; Bxb2 cxb2 ; Rxb5.
(Of course the final position here is a huge win for Black.)

It seems to me, though, that the only way to tell whether it's
"understood" the position would be to understand why it didn't
choose the other possible moves...

Incidentally, after thinking for an hour (at which point it's
just starting to think about ply 15) about the position after ...Ba6,
it's less enthusiastic about the prospects for Black, giving an
eval of about -1. The PV is: Rh2 exf5 ; e6 Bc4 ; e7 Bb5 ; Rh4+ Kd3 ;
Rb4 Bc6 ; Rb8 Kd2 ; Kg2 Bd7 ; Rd8 Bb5 ; Rxd5+. The last few moves
here are obviously rubbish. And after thinking for an hour about
the position after Rh2 exf5; e6, it again reckons about -1, with
PV ...Ke3 ; Bc1+ Kd3 ; Kf4 Bb5 ; Ke5 d4 ; e7 Kc4 ; Ba3 c2 ; Rh8 Kc3 ;
Rc8+ Kd3 ; Bb2 Ke3 ; e8=Q Bxe8 ; Rxe8. Again, the last few moves are
rubbish.
