>Exactly. He has been in computerchess since, when, the late 60s? He has >been world champion, he publishes work related to computer chess and >obviously he uses time and resources at his university to work on the >program. If that still is amateur status, then the word has no meaning. >What has to be remembered though, is that he, from what I understand, >has partly different goals than the commercials. Well, he can speak for >himself... > >Ralf I believe that Carl Lewis was in 4 Olympics, won numerous Gold medals yet even after 16+years in the game, he was still classified an "amateur". When does one exactly become a professional programmer? Doe he/she wake up one morning and has the title bestowed on him/her? In the Olympic spirit one is an "amateur" until they join a "professional" circuit. SOS is as strong as Crafty, some say even stronger.. yet it is not on the list.. Is Ruldolf Huber a " professional " programmer as well? James Robertson has a very good program in Insomniac.. very strong, and has a very good rating on ICC. At what rating will he not be a " green " programmer? I think the people charge of the " green " list need to look a little deeper and see that really just because Crafty is stronger.. doesn't mean that it shouldn't be included. If all the programs that happen to be stronger than the current Green List participants are left off due to strength, then why have a list? Do you not see my point?
