Subject: Hiarcs7.32's learning bug

Author: blass uri

Date: 22:30:17 07/02/00

The opening of this game was based on one of the games Fritz-Junior.

Time control is 180 minutes/40 moves.
Hardware: pentiumIII450
hash tables 64 mbytes for both engines
games on one computer

Hiarcs7.32(opening based on Fritz's book) lost against Crafty17.11(opening based
on Junior's book)
The interesting fact is that Hiarcs needed a long time to find that 43.Bxb6 is
bad for white(I watced the game and hiarcs failed low after 62 seconds but
needed 14 minutes and 33 seconds to solve the fail low at depth 10 and more time
to find a better move).

After the game I tried to give hiarcs the position before 43.Bxb6 and was
surprised to find that it can see that 43.Bxb6 is losing at depth 9 and also can
find 43.Qe8 in less than 4 minutes

I decided to give it to play the position before 43.Qe8 and it found the right
move at time control of 1 hours/40 moves+3 hours/40 with no problem(see -1.88/10
647 at the pgn file).

I decided also to give it the position before 42.axb4 at the same time control
and after 42.axb4 Bxb4 it needed to be at depth 11 to get a fail low after 3
minutes and 14 seconds.
It could solve the fail low after 52 minutes and 23 seconds but had not enough
time to discover a better move so it played 43.Bxb6
